Sky Woman is the First Mother, she fell from the Upper World, carrying light in her hands and possibility in her womb. In the Haudenosaunee telling, she descends through a hole in the Sky Realm and is caught by the gentle wings and backs of the animal nations. They bring her to the waters, where Great Turtle rises, offering his shell. Upon his back, Sky Woman plants the seeds she carried, dancing creation into form. From her footsteps come the first plants, the first medicines, and the first stories of this Earth. She is the origin of gratitude, renewal, and the sacred bond between humans and the natural world.
