Product Description

Eshu Elegbara or Papa Legba is the youngest master of the crossroads. It is Papa Legba you ask to open the way forward to spirit ... he is the guardian of all thresholds. He owns the path to your door. Simply, he opens and closes the roads. He is seen through Saints Peter and Anthony. Papa Legba is the concrete head with the cowrie shell eyes.

Keep an eye out for keys, crutches, canes, walking sticks... they are signs of Legba about. They say the mouse is his animal, but I've seen him as a wise man on the street with a puppy. His colors are red and black. His number is 3. Give him three of offering. Candy, candy cigarettes, cigarettes, spicy food dishes and a sweet liquour.

Legba is blending of sweet coconut, oakmoss, yuzu brightness, cuban tobacco and myrtle.

Papa Legba is a powerful and revered as the intermediary between us and spirit worlds. He is the guardian of crossroads, the opener of doors, and the communicator between the living and the divine. Rituals connecting to Papa Legba: 1. Preparing the Ritual Space (Opening the Gateways) Papa Legba is the keyholder and guardian of the spiritual crossroads, so preparing the space is essential. This involves cleansing and consecrating the area to invite his presence. • Aromatics: Cleansing and Inviting Scents o Tobacco: The smoke from burning tobacco is a key offering to Papa Legba. The strong, earthy scent clears the space of negativity and invites Legba to open the pathways for communication. o Cedarwood and Bay Leaves: These can be burned or placed around the ritual space to purify and create an inviting atmosphere for Papa Legba. Cedarwood's warm, woody aroma grounds the energy, while bay leaves add a sharp, protective layer. o Coffee Beans: The smell of freshly brewed coffee, a favored offering to Papa Legba, adds a rich, energizing aroma to the ritual space. Coffee is both a symbol of hospitality and an offering that helps to awaken the spiritual connection. 2. Creating the Vévé (Sacred Symbols) A vévé, a sacred drawing made with cornmeal or flour, represents Papa Legba and acts as a focal point in the ritual. The drawing is often made at a crossroads or at the entrance to the ritual space. • Aromatics: Earthy and Grounding Scents o Frankincense and Myrrh: Burn these resins as incense while creating the vévé to sanctify the space and invoke Papa Legba’s presence. Their deep, resinous scent connects the practitioner to the spiritual world. o Patchouli (graveyard dirt): The earthy, musky aroma of patchouli helps ground the energy of the ritual, anchoring the spiritual work in the physical world and aligning it with Papa Legba’s earthy nature. 3. Offering Ritual (Gifts for Papa Legba) Offerings for Papa: • Aromatics: Sweet and Spicy Scents o Cane Sugar and Rum: These are traditional offerings to Papa Legba. The sweet scent of sugar and the rich aroma of rum are placed at the vévé or poured onto the ground, symbolizing abundance and respect. o Cinnamon and Clove: Burned as incense or added to the offerings, these spices have a warm, inviting scent that appeals to Papa Legba’s jovial nature. They also represent the fire of life and the energy needed to open spiritual pathways. o Vanilla: The sweet, comforting aroma of vanilla can be offered as an essence or in the form of candles. Vanilla’s scent invokes warmth and kindness, qualities associated with Papa Legba. 4. Invocation - Opening the Crossroads During the invocation, the practitioner calls upon Papa Legba to open the gates between the worlds, allowing us to communicate with the spirits. • Aromatics: Evoking and Enhancing Scents o Basil: Known as a sacred herb in many traditions, basil’s fresh, herbal scent is used to attract positive energy and protection. It can be offered as a fresh plant, burned, or used as part of an anointing oil. o Peppermint: The sharp, refreshing aroma of peppermint stimulates the senses and enhances focus, helping to clarify communication with Papa Legba. It can be used as an essential oil or in fresh form to anoint the space or the practitioner. o Coconut Oil: Often used in anointing rituals, the sweet, creamy scent of coconut oil is associated with purity and nourishment. It can be offered to Papa Legba to honor his role as a guide and protector. 5. The Ritual Work (Petitions and Guidance) With Papa Legba’s presence invoked, the practitioner can proceed with the main ritual, which may involve making petitions, seeking guidance, or spellwork. • Aromatics: Spiritually Uplifting Scents o Bay Rum: A traditional scent in Caribbean spiritual practices, bay rum can be used to anoint the practitioner or the ritual tools. Its spicy, invigorating aroma aligns with Papa Legba’s energy, invoking his favor and assistance. o Vetiver: This rooty, earthy scent is grounding and protective, used to deepen the spiritual connection and secure the practitioner’s petitions to Papa Legba. Vetiver oil can be anointed on the vévé or used in incense. o Citrus (Lemon or Orange): The bright, uplifting scents of citrus fruits are associated with clarity and renewal. Lemon or orange peels can be offered or used to cleanse and refresh the space, symbolizing the clearing of obstacles. 6. Closing the Ritual - Respects Once the ritual work is complete, it is important to thank Papa Legba and properly close the crossroads, ensuring that the pathways are respectfully sealed. • Aromatics: Soothing and Grounding Scents o Lavender: The calming, soothing scent of lavender helps to close the ritual gently, easing the transition back to the mundane world. It can be used to anoint the space or burned as incense to thank Papa Legba for his presence and guidance. o Rosemary: A herb of remembrance and protection, rosemary’s scent is a final offering that honors the connection made during the ritual and ensures the space is left in peace. It can be sprinkled at the crossroads or burned. o Tobacco (again): As a final offering, a pinch of tobacco can be sprinkled on the ground or in the fire as a closing gift to Papa Legba, acknowledging his role in the ritual and respectfully sealing the spiritual gateway. 7. Leaving Offerings at the Crossroads As a final act, it is customary to leave offerings at a crossroads to solidify the connection and ensure that Papa Legba continues to open paths for the practitioner. • Aromatics: Final Scents of Gratitude o Honey and Bread: The sweet, nourishing scents of honey and fresh bread are traditional offerings left at the crossroads, symbolizing gratitude and the continuity of life’s paths. o Red Palm Oil: The rich, warm aroma of red palm oil is a powerful offering to Papa Legba, often poured at the crossroads to seal the connection and ask for continued protection and guidance. Through these aromatic and plant allies, practitioners can deepen their connection to Papa Legba, creating a ritual space that resonates with his energies and invites his blessings. Each scent and plant used in the ritual not only appeals to Papa Legba but also enhances the spiritual atmosphere, making the ritual a powerful and meaningful act of devotion.
